RPE vs RIR for Weighted Calisthenics Training

Most people use RPE and RIR like they're the same thing. They're not, and the difference matters more on weighted pull-ups and dips than it does on a barbell lift.

What each one actually measures

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is a 1-10 scale for how hard a set felt overall. RIR (Reps in Reserve) is a direct count: how many more reps could you have done before failure. They're related but they're not the same question. RPE asks how it felt. RIR asks how many you had left.

On a barbell squat or bench, both work fine because bar speed gives you a second signal to cross-check against. The bar slows down as you approach failure, so you have visual and tactile feedback backing up your internal read.

Weighted pull-ups and dips don't give you that. There's no bar speed to watch. Your body is the load, and grip, shoulder position, and belt setup all change how a rep feels independent of how close you actually are to failure. That's why I default to RIR over RPE for these two lifts. It forces a concrete count instead of a vibe.

Where RPE still earns its place

I'm not throwing RPE out entirely. It's useful at the session level, not the set level. After a training session, I'll ask how the session felt overall on a 1-10 scale. That number tells me something RIR can't: accumulated fatigue across the whole session, not just one set. If someone's RIR counts on individual sets look fine but their session RPE is creeping up week over week, that's early signal a deload is coming before performance actually drops.

So the split I run is: RIR for autoregulating load within a session, RPE for tracking fatigue trend across sessions.

How I actually use RIR to adjust TSW

This only works if you're tracking Total System Weight, not just added plate weight. My best strict chin-up is 137.5 lb TSW for a triple, and that number only means something because it's bodyweight plus belt weight together, not the plate alone. A rep that feels like 2 RIR at one bodyweight is a different physiological event than the same RIR reading after your bodyweight has shifted for reasons that have nothing to do with training. TSW is the number RIR is actually rating.

Within a session, here's the logic. If a top set comes in at 3+ RIR, that's a signal the load was light relative to where the athlete actually is, and the next set or the next session gets a jump. If it comes in at 0-1 RIR on anything other than a planned top-out attempt, that's a signal to hold or back off, not push further. I don't adjust based on what the plan said going in. I adjust based on what the rep actually told me.

This is where a lot of people get their weighted pull-up progression stuck. They follow a fixed percentage-based plan that doesn't know their bodyweight moved, their sleep was bad that week, or they switched gyms and the setup changed how the rep feels. I switched gyms recently myself and the equipment differences, thicker plates, different bar spacing, changed how certain reps felt even though nothing about my actual strength had changed. If I were running fixed percentages instead of RIR-based autoregulation, that gym switch would have looked like a strength change on paper when it wasn't one.

Where people misuse RIR

Two mistakes I see constantly. First, treating RIR as fixed instead of contextual: someone decides "I always leave 2 in the tank" and never adjusts regardless of how the session is actually going. That defeats the entire point of autoregulation, which is responding to what's actually happening, not running a script with an RIR label slapped on it.

Second, rating RIR based on grip or shoulder discomfort instead of actual proximity to failure. This one cost me reps directly. On heavy chin-up sets, grip gives out before my back does more often than I'd like to admit, and if I log that set as 0 RIR because my hands were done, I've recorded bad data even though my back could have pulled two more. What to run

Pick RIR as your working number on sets, log it every session, and stop treating it as an afterthought you fill in after the fact. Pull your TSW alongside it so the RIR reading is actually measuring something consistent. Watch session RPE as the slower-moving number that tells you when a full block is catching up to you, separate from any single day's performance.
